Knee Tendonitis

Knee Tendonitis

Tendonitis means ‘inflammation of a tendon’. This can happen spontaneously or from overuse, for example in runners. Tendonitis is a common cause of pain in the knee.

Patellar tendonitis – Inflammation of the tendon at the front of the knee below the kneecap.
Quadriceps tendonitis -Inflammation of the tendons just above the front of the knee.
Iliotibial band friction syndrome – Inflammation of the tissues on the outer side of the knee.

Treatment

  • Rest/Physiotherapy resolves most cases.
  • Anti-inflammatories
  • Cortisone / steroid injections
  • Very occasionally, surgery may be required, with a ‘tendon decompression’
